Our new aircraft will make a difference to the planet. Over the next few years we will gradually be phasing in new aircraft, which will give us a fleet that comprises exclusively of modern, more fuel-efficient aircraft. Our new A320neo and A321neo LR (Long Range) aircraft from Airbus use 15-18 percent less fuel than the models they are replacing, and our new A350s from the same supplier use 30 percent less fuel than the A340s they are replacing. As a result, CO2 emissions will decrease correspondingly and other climate-impacting emissions will also be reduced. Another advantage of the new aircraft models is that they are also less noisy.
An aircraft has a long life, but our strategy is to upgrade engines, furnishings etc. on an ongoing basis over the life of the aircraft. By replacing the furnishings in existing aircraft, for example, we’ve reduced the weight of the aircraft by several hundred kilos. So, we’re improving the efficiency of our aircraft and, at the same time, we’re making our passengers’ onboard experience more comfortable and more enjoyable.
In addition, SAS and Airbus have partnered up in a joint research project around electric aircraft, which could revolutionise aircraft emissions through increased use of electrification in future generations of aircraft.
